In the Faulty of Applied Sciences, there is growing interest in the use of aerial platforms for capturing digital spatial data. Additionally, the Biosciences Team have been particularly active in this area, having recently experimented with data collection using a quadcopter on a recent field trip to South Africa. Whilst in South Africa we trialled the use of kite aerial photography for mapping nesting seabirds on the Welsh coast.
The challenge is now how best to process, manage and analyse this data using open source GIS tools, and we will be reporting on our progress with this in due course.
